Here is my long-awaited pallet furniture tutorial! I’m not going to talk too much because I have A LOT of pictures to show you guys!
First, we started with a stack of pallets. I think we purchased 15 and they were $2 each (I ended up only needing about 6 of them). The initial plan was to make a back to the benches, but after looking at the patio, we didn’t think that was feasible. The back would have ended up leaning against the screen, maybe causing it to tear. So we opted not to put the backs on.
Next, we cut one pallet in half, just to test out the size and scale.
We continued to cut the remainder of the pallets. We then stacked them 3 pallets high to form each bench. We nailed/screwed each pallet into each other until they were sturdy.
Up next, was adding feet. We wanted them to sit a little higher, and not lay flat on the ground. Home Depot had some scrap pieces of 4×4 that they said we could have. We cut each feet to approximately 3 1/2 inches. We used 4 inch nails to secure them to the bottom of the bench.
Paint was next. We finally got to use the paint sprayer we purchased like 2 years ago. I chose not to sand them first, because let’s be honest, “Ain’t nobody got time for that”! We had some leftover white paint from a previous project, so we used that. We did 2 coats of paint. We probably could have done 3, but it was so hot outside; I just wanted to get it done and over!
We let them dry for a couple of hours, then put them inside the patio! We didn’t bother painting the tops since that part will be covered by cushions anyway.
I completely forgot to take pics of how we made the cushions, but it was super easy. It took less than 30 minutes to make 4 of them! I ordered the fabric from Fabric.com. It is the Raji print in black. We went to Home Depot and had a piece of plywood cut to the size of each bench. We then removed the batting from some old patio cushions that I found on Craigslist. We laid the fabric down 1st, then the batting, and topped it with the piece of plywood. We then just stapled the fabric to the plywood being sure to pull it taunt on all sides. Done & done!
This project was a little time consuming, but well worth it! I could have easily purchased a patio set from Lowe’s or Home Depot, but I wanted something unique and DIY’ed. I’m so happy with the results. We spend alot of time out here now. The patio is still not done, but it’s coming together!
Hope you enjoyed!
