As you all may know, my Sweety bought me a sewing machine for Christmas. It lived in the box for what seems like an eternity. One day, I was brave enough to take it out of its sleeping quarters, and give it a new home on my sewing table. It lived there for a while, untouched. I started watching YouTube tutorials for “beginner sewers”, such as myself. It literally took me an hour to figure out how to thread the needle & the bobbin. After I finally got it all threaded, the machine sat again for a few weeks. So one Saturday, I sat down and played around with stitching. After much practice, I finally got the hang of it. So you know I thought I was a professional seamstress at this point, right? LOL! Well, I bought this “project dress” below. All I wanted to do was shorten the hem & make me a cute little mini dress. Disaster!
After countless amounts of thread
A broken needle later
And me finally having to finish it by hand
I present to you……my first DIY mini dress romper!!! Unfortunately, I cut the hem too short, so it would not have been a mini dress, but more like a tunic/shirt! So I relied on my trusty YouTube tutorials again to teach me how to transform a skirt into shorts….and here you have it!
Let me just say that you will NOT be seeing me wear this. It is now too small! FAIL!
So how do you think I did for my 1st sewing experience? Do I get an A for effort?

Cute! Hate you can't wear it, but it does give hope for the future. LOL! Now, I feel like I need a sewing machine.
I really like it.
Yup A for effort chick.
Very cute great job!
A+ for effort! So cute, now you have me thinking of dresses I can make into rompers!
Definitely A for effort Hon! Hope i can do this soon. I only just started sewing lessons- i've only learned how to sew straight lol!

Looks great, what do we do before youtube! I was gifted a sewing machine a while back, I started off strong but ummm let's just say I haven't made or altered one piece of clothing yet! lol
U did a GR8 1st JOB!!!! I hate you can't wear it but U can always gift it to me!!!!! LOL!!!!
it really sucks it's too small, because it's so cute. I think you did a great job…and yes A for effort!
nice try hunny, it looks really cute in the pic though!!
A for effort for sure! I love it!!
Ha! Love it! I've had a sewing machine for 3 years and have yet to be as ambitious! I'm inspired now though
Well, I must say it looks cute laying there on the floor! After the needle broke, I would have burst into tears and thrown the whole thing away so kudos for at least finishing

Definite A+ for effort! You are brave to try sewing something on your own. I don't think I would have gotten as far as you. Great job!
BRAVO!!! I think it's dope you flipped that dress into a romper the way you did. Sucks it's too small but at least you know you can do it! I need to try some more DIY with my clothes. This was inspiration!!
A+! I love the fact that you just went balls to the wall with it and made something work. The romper looks cute the way you've styled it. Sorry it doesn't fit.
Aww, but it looks so cute too!!!
I applaud you for even tackling a sewing project just by Youtube and practice. I took a sewing class ages ago and my mother and I bought a sewing machine. It sadly goes unused now.
I say you look up a local community center or fabric store for a beginner's lesson. You could get some helpful hints and tips at once that will keep you from wasting so much time and thread. Good luck with your next sewing project!!!
Haha, at least you tried. I do NOT have the patience for sewing at all.
SELLIT! IT'S SOOO CUTE!!!!! gREAT JOB, NOT A FAIL!!!!!
BESOS,LYNN
Definite A++. Dress into a romper that's pass the beginner stage in my book!
You tried but um, how did you break the needle? I started off sewing with no formal training and I'm still trying to complete my first project for the 3rd time. Look up Threads on Youtube. They have some good tutorials.
First of all I'm laughing too hard because I've been there and done that. Actually you did really well for your first try. You should actually practice some more. The fact that you turn the dress into a romper says potential. Totally get an A.
yes you get an A for effort! this post was hilarious!

Definitely A for effort, looks cute !
I give you an A for effort!!! You did a good job selvaging the dress I know what it's like to go through a sewing disaster I have had my fair share of them but with practice and perseverance you will get there =)
You have done soooooooooooo well.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
you definitely get an A for effort– yess! Betta than I would have gotten. Placing it on the floor shows how well it was constructed.
How about I do even know how to operate a sewing machine –so that's a FAIL! lol!
ME TOO! It took me more than a FEW hours to study youtube and learn how to thread the needle and put a hem in something. Add to all of that and I HATE ironing, the heart of sewing. This is an inspiration to stop neglecting my sewing machine though. And you did a great job! *coughwhatsizeisthatropmercough*
You get an A++++ for effort and patience. I love the romper and I hope you can find somebody that can wear it. Maybe you can turn it into a shirt. Anyway..great job.
Wow! This beyond A+++! Great job Hun! I need to learn how to sew again!

HEY….NO FAIL!!! You did great!!! Sucks that it's too small though! At least you were able to salvage it some kind of way…I'm pretty sure I would have ruined it and it would have been in the trash! LOL! Definitely an E for effort!
Wow thats awesome. it looks amazing. I cant wait to see you wear it. I like it better as shorts too!

OMG, how cute! I likes, I likes!
If I was wearing a hat right now, I would tip it towards you, or however that saying/action goes.
& you can totally wear that romper with some black tights. That's what I do if rompers are too short.
Deff get a A+!
xo $ARMIN
LOL you're funny!
It looks AMAZING as a romper! I love it!!!
That GOOD GOOD Blog
take it from me, for your first project you diod great! you picked such a hard project to do though, even i cannot make a short, romper, pants yet. those things are hard to do. you know what, you should try a wide banded short or long flare skirt first. here are some channels on youtube to help you start.
Giannyl: she is so amazing, she makes sewing seem like child's play. and her designs are beginner friendly
Rebbsew:
mslselle
try them out and see if it helps.
ha, you just motivated a sister to pull out her sewing machine. i really want to make some pencil skirts for the fall in like every color imaginable! A blogger i follow sews her dresses by hand! Girl I can't even imagine doing that! I love the jumper! maybe yoou can donate it to someone who can be fashionable! you never know where it will end up!
Oh ma gosh this is too cute. A fail turned into a fashion plus. Is it my size? I use to love sewing when I was in high school but real life happened. I admire you for challenging yourself. We all know you can learn everything on YouTube.

For a first timer, you did a good job. And I liked how you styled it. Maybe you should do a giveaway since the finished product turned out to be too small. I've been meaning to take sewing classes for eons. Never really considered YouTube. Will definitely check it out.
Definitely an A for effort. The Romper looks too cute!
You did awesome! I've been wanting to turn my skirt into a pair of shorts for some time. Can you post the link to the tutorial you watched?
